From diet to revolution?

The results of a study on a plant-based diet among monozygotic twins conducted at Stanford University were published in the medical journal JAMA Network Open. This study is another one showing the health-promoting effects of a plant-based diet. Over a two-month period, one twin in 22 pairs followed a balanced diet with meat while the other followed a balanced vegan diet. The group on the vegan diet showed a clear decrease in cholesterol and insulin levels, indicating a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and a greater weight loss compared to those on a traditional diet. The article discussing the study concludes by recommending the adoption of a plant-based diet in medical practice as a recommendation for patients.

Two weeks earlier, in mid-November, a meta-analysis was published, summarizing the results of 37 different studies, concluding that a plant-based diet ‘is beneficially associated with cardiometabolic health and all-cause mortality.’

The health-promoting effects of limiting or excluding meat from the diet are now evident and increasingly significant. Modern medicine increasingly emphasizes the importance of diet and lifestyle. The newest fields in medicine are culinary medicine and lifestyle medicine.
